Cães & Cia Magazine
I'm a Brazilian journalist, I work at a Pet
Magazine called "Cães & Cia", which stands for "Dogs and Co."
I'm writing an article on Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I'd like to
ask you some questions, may I? Rachel Rothier
, Cães & Cia Magazine
sometimes ask you to classify the breed into the options I give.
Please choose one of the options and explain me why you chose.
Sometimes I just ask if you do recommend or not the breed for
that or that purpose. Please, always tell me why you chose this
or that answer, for me to understand the breed´s temperament,
ok? I know individuals can differ, but we´re trying to make a
guideline of this breed temperament, considering, obviously,
that each individual can act in a different way.)
- How much affection does this breed require?
Do you classify as much affection / moderate affection / or
little affection? Why do you classify like that?
(what do they do routinely for you to say that
they are like that?)
affection. Every dog needs at least a bit of affection, chessies
are very friendly and they love their "family". They routinely
come to pet and they feel like they're protectors of the house
and all members in it. However they are not like you can't do
anything but being with them, they're pretty much self-contained.
- How active are them?
Do you classify as little active / medium active / highly
I classify them as Highly active. You can take them for a whole-day
walk, they can run whole day in a forrest, they have an
incredible persistence and they are very focused. I wouldn't
recomment this breed to someone who wants to have a dog in the
garden, as the garden isn't enough.
- How social are they with other animals (cats,
birds, small mammals, etc)?
Do you recommend this companionship (I mean, is it possible for
this breed to live with other animals? Or you don´t recommend
because they tend not to get along well?
Chessies are pretty much sociable. If they get to
know the other pet, they can live with it.
- How social are they with other dogs?
Do you recommend this breed living with other dogs, from the
same breed or from different breeds? (I mean, do this breed get
along well with other dogs, in general?) Or you do not
recommend, as it´s most likely for them to have problems?
absolutely recommend the breed in this case. They can live with
any other dog, they are self-confident and they don't need any
proves, they don't care about other dogs. That's the difference
between them and for example terriers, terriers feel like they're
bosses, but chessies surely are the bosses. If you get them a
little puppy, they will take care of them. If you meet a dog
outside, they ignore him, or go to see him but that's it.
- How social are they with strangers?
Would you classify them as sociable / aloof / suspicious /
vigilant (wary)? Why?
I classify CBRs as sociable. Since they are not afraid of
anything, they are absolutely even-tempered, you can take them
- How tolerant are they with children?
Do you recommend this breed to children of all ages / do you
recommend to children 10+ years / or you do not recommend this
breed to children? Why?
They're absolutely good to children, very tolerant. My own
experience is that my little son (3yrs old) was making a "chair"
of our dog. My dog hadn't even raise his head, so I would say
they are good to children of all ages.
– what does this breed require: Daily brushing / weekly brushing
/ brushing every 2 days / brushing every 3 days?
Grooming - they have short rough coat and it doesn't need to
brush that often, I would say like once in a month they need to
brush. If there's some hair which fell off the coat, it lays on
the ground, because it's heavier than for example golden
retriever hair or people hair.
- How much space does this breed need?
Small area / medium area / large area?
Medium area. No dog would feel comfortable in a small space, but
they are okay when they have their own bed and regular activity,
walks and so on.
- Is it better for this breed to live
indoors / outdoors / both indoors and outdoors?
I had a dog either indoors and outdoors and I think he's happier
outdoors, they sometimes can feel hot at home since they have a
very dense coat. Of course you need to make everything done for
him properly, like a good insulated doghouse and so on. But the
dog can get used to living in both places, too.
- Exercise need
– little need / medium need / much need? Why?
Medium. They love learning new things, they need to have some
activity and they need to have contact with you. Medium should
- How much does this breed bark?
Little barking / medium / bark a lot? In what circumstances does
I can't say that, it depends on you if you let him bark and also
it depends on the dog. But usually they're barking because they're
bored of doing nothing. If you take care of your dog and he is
not in the garden all day long he does not bark at all. So
- What is this breed used for?
Guard dog / defense dog / hunting dog / sports /
companion / shepherd ?
dog, Sports dog, companion, sometimes also defense dog, but that's
mainly because they look big and some people are afraid of them.
- How obedient are they?
little obedient / medium obedient / much obedient? Why? What do
they obey or not? Please, give me examples.
Much obedient. If you teach him something, he knows it very very
fast and won't forget it. They also won't run away when they see
a rabbit in the field. For example I had taught a show stack one
of my young females a week before the dogshow, she knew it
immediately and when i wanted to take a photo of her some time
later, she still knew it and she hadn't tried it like for a year.
They also have amazing working skills, you only need to spend a
little time with them. They will do what they see in your eyes.
